Red Bull Music Academy brings you a new web documentary series that looks at the secret history of Japanese video game music, from the 8-bit era to today.

‘Diggin’ In The Carts’ explores over three decades of Japanese video games and the creators behind some of the most recognisable soundtracks of global pop culture. The six-part series will expose the unsung heroes behind these famous melodies, who have remained faceless in modesty for years.

The series features exclusive interviews with the creators behind the genre, including Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka, who’s responsible for the music to classic games like Tetris and Metroid, Yuzo Koshiro, who wrote the soundtrack to Streets of Rage, and Nobuo Uematsu, whose scores for the Final Fantasy series have been performed by some of the world’s leading orchestras.  The series also features guest interviews from the likes of Flying Lotus, Dizzee Rascal, Just Blaze, Joker, Fatima Al Qadiri, Kode9, Havoc, J-Rocc and Ikonika, who have all been heavily influenced by video game sounds in their individual careers.
